Who can participate?

Participants will come from classrooms all over the world.  There is no prerequisite training needed.  Content is geared toward students from  grades 4-8, but can be easily modified by the teacher at any time.  There will be links throughout the website for you to read and collect information to use or share with others.  Whether it is from the U.S. Geological Survey website, Caltech website, or other site, there will be opportunities for live monitoring and earthquake research.

You will research earthquakes from your region and write a description of what took place in your country during an earthquake. You will research and plan an earthquake plan that is specific to your geographical location describing how to be prepared for an earthquake, what to do before, during, and after an earthquake, and relay any personal experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Your plans will be posted to this website for review by others to make comments and ask questions. You will work collaboratively to enhance earthquake plans that will be useful in all countries that experience earthquakes.

What are your standards-aligned Learning Objective(s) for this GLP?
Students know how to determine the epicenter of an earthquake and know that the effects of an earthquake on any region vary, depending on the size of the earthquake, the distance of the region from the epicenter, the local geology, and the type of construction in the region.
Students will research and prepare an earthquake preparedness plan that outlines their role during an earthquake, and find ways to reduce risk of injury during that experience.  You may modifiy projects to fit your classroom needs.
